The purpose of this webpage is to help Google in their efforts to search for a suitable test place for their fiber optic network project.
Background: The McAllen, TX area (Rio Grande Valley) is comprised of several cities close to the Mexican border. Before the NAFTA era these cities and communities main economic activity was agricultural and retail sales. Manufacturing has been around since the 60's in the form of assembly plants (maquiladoras) but not to today's levels. The rate of growth in the business related services and manufacturing has skyrocked after the introduction of NAFTA making the McAllen, TX area one the of the fastest growing areas in the United States. Despite the economic growth some services mainly IT (internet technologies) and communications technologies are stagnant with decades old technologies dating as far back as the 40's or 50's. Cost advantages: One of the strengths of the McAllen, TX area is the abundant and relatively cheap work force. This is one of the reasons so many manufacturing companies have moved into this area. No work force is complete without strong education support especially for the 21st century technologies and we are lucky to have numerous Universities and technical community colleges at our disposition. Topographical advantages: Most of the McAllen area utilities are aerial with a few new subdivisions using underground wiring and cabling. This topology is ideal for Google's fiber optics testing purposes as the need for expensive trenching and digging is unnecessary. The existing utility poles carry services from AT&T (fiber optic cable and copper) and Time Warner Cable (fiber optic cable and copper) Climatic advantages: Average temperatures in the McAllen, TX area is mild compared to most of the United States. Temperature range from the low 40s (F) and occasional upper 30s (F) in Winter to as high as low 100s (F) in the Summer. This mild weather makes the McAllen area an ideal place to be used as a test bench for fiber buildouts. Climate conditions will not be an issue when deploying and maintaining a fiber optic network. Tremendous business and residential potential: The McAllen area and surrounding communities business growth is a tremendous opportunity for new companies like Google to come into the area and do business. As previously mentioned this area has been technologically neglected for so many years that business and residential customers will migrate to newer technologies as soon as they become available. We have been involved with medium size companies still using adsl technologies for internet connectivity with no other options available. Some newer business areas have fiber options by TimeWarner or AT&T but this is only available for very large corporations like GE or TRW and at very high costs.
Office space availability and affordability: Office space availability is a big advantage with virtually endless affordable options available. We even have a few suggestions for Google's future offices here Undeveloped lot1 Undeveloped lot2 Undeveloped lot3 which is far larger, better located and with a better growth potential than AT&T's 1960's office located two miles south. AT&T (formerly SBC) From the google maps view one can understand the tremendous growth potential and privileged location that the McAllen, TX area has to offer. It's centric location can be used as a bridge between the east and west parts of the Rio Grande Valley. The Rio Grande Valley will continue their explosive growth in the next decades, a growth that cannot be ignored and a growth that offer unlimited economic opportunities.
